For dogs who love a game

Christmas Wreath Snuffle Mat

The Christmas Wreath Snuffle Mat for Dogs is the festive star of this list. Hide dry treats or kibble among the fabric strips and your dog sniffs them out, turning snack time into a puzzle. The green wreath design with a yellow bell and ribbon looks the part under the tree. It measures about 70 x 70 cm and is machine or hand washable. As with any toy, supervise your dog while it uses the mat.

Self-Moving Jumping Ball

For high-energy dogs, the Self-Moving Jumping Ball Dog Toy rolls, bounces and changes direction on its own, so there's always something to chase. Press the button to switch it on. It has a built-in rechargeable battery and comes in orange or blue, in two sizes (56 mm or 67 mm across). Pick the size that suits your dog, and put the ball away if it gets damaged.

Stretchy Tricolour Dog Ball

Prefer a simple game of fetch? The Stretchy Bouncy Dog Ball is made from stretchy, bouncy TPR rubber in a bright three-colour design that's easy to spot in the grass. Choose small frosted, small spiky or large frosted. No dog toy is indestructible, so swap it out if it starts to wear.

For cats (and the people who love them)

Flapping Bird Cat Toy

Indoor cats need something to hunt. The Flapping Bird Cat Toy flaps its wings and flutters about like a real bird to catch your cat's attention, and it's USB rechargeable, so you're not forever buying batteries. It comes in two styles and two sizes.

Cat Night Light

This one is for the cat lover rather than the cat. The LED Cat Night Light is a rounded lamp with a little sleeping cat inside. It gives off a warm yellow glow, and you tap the switch to dim it to your preferred brightness. It's rechargeable, with an indicator light that turns from red to green when fully charged. A sweet bedside gift for any cat person.

Festive photo-ready outfits

Pet Christmas Hat & Bow Tie

Christmas card photos sorted. The Pet Christmas Party Hat & Bow Tie is a red and white cloth cone hat with pom-poms and an elastic strap, plus a bow tie that fastens with a buckle. It fits dogs and cats, and it's one size. Buy the hat and bow tie as a set (dotted or chevron bow tie), or just one piece, including a snowflake bow tie. Keep an eye on your pet while they wear it and take it off if they start chewing.

For walks, road trips and fur clean-ups

Not every great pet gift is a toy. These practical picks get used year-round.

Portable Dog Water Bottle

The Portable Dog Water Bottle has a built-in drinking bowl, so you can give your dog a drink on a walk without packing a separate dish. It's made from durable BPA-free plastic, helps cut down on spills in the bag or car, and comes in pink, turquoise or white.

Dog Car Seat Cover

For the dog who always rides along, the Dog Car Seat Cover protects the upholstery from fur and scratches. It has a water-repellent top side, adjustable anchors with quick-release buckles that attach to the headrests, and a foldable design for storage.

Pet Hair Remover Brush

Every pet owner needs one. The Pet Hair Remover Brush is a manual, wooden-handled brush that lifts dog and cat hair off sweaters, sofas and clothes, with no batteries or sticky refills. It's compact enough to keep by the front door.

Pet Hair Spray Brush

For grooming at the source, the Pet Hair Spray Brush has a built-in water tank and a release button, so it gives a gentle spray as you brush to help gather loose, shedding hair. It suits both cats and dogs.

Quick tips for choosing a pet gift

• Match the energy. A busy young dog will love the jumping ball. A dog who needs to slow down at mealtimes may prefer the snuffle mat.
• Think about size. Where there are two sizes, pick the one that suits the pet's mouth and play style.
• Supervise new toys. Even the toughest toy should be checked regularly and replaced if it's damaged.
